My Teaching Metaphor

My teaching metaphor reflects all the aspects I think I have in terms of my teaching practice. This exercise has let me reflect upon my characteristics as teacher. Regarding these characteristics I would like to mention some of them. First, I realize the importance of being sociable and friendly with my students, peers and in general, with the community I belong to. Second, I relate myself as an open-minded person, ready to learn and ready to teach. Finally, my teaching practice during these years has showed me the benefits and consequences of my experience. In this sense, I can conclude this is an ongoing process, full of opportunities to grow. Hope this metaphor increases each time in terms of the characteristics I mentioned and the ones I have to be working from now.

  1. Hi Hans,
Beautiful metaphor, it includes all the most important characteristics a teacher should have. What I like the most from your metaphore is the relationship that you state in your role as teacher with the rest of the educational community. Being open minded gives always the oportunity to change or improve. However i would like to know what is the role of the students in your life and also to explain what are the benefits or consequenses you have find in your profession. Thanks for sharing your drawing...

    1. Dear Nata,

Thanks for the comment. This profession is one of the most demanding jobs but at the same time one of the most grateful ones. My students are part of my life, each one if them plays a particular role in my life and have shaped the way I am to some extent. These guys, are the basis of my teaching principles and the main actors in my profession.
In relation to the benefits, I have found the most wonderful experiences by being a teacher. This profession has let me know amazing people (students, co-workers, professors, principals, peers, community, along others). My teaching process has showed me as a consequence that this profession is an enriching experience, full of opportunities, wishes and desires

  2. Hi dear Hans!
What a lovely metaphor! I totally agree with you in the sense of having a good relationship with the school community. I think we as teachers have a strong social commitment, therefore we are expected to tackle social issues that affect the processes of teaching and learning. Besides, it is important to take into account some qualities as you mentioned before, such as being friendly, open.minded and I can add another one, being responsible and devoted to our job. nevertheless, I would like to know if there is something you would like to change or improve in your teaching practice? Thank you for sharing your experience as a reflective-practitioner !

    1. Dear Noryda,

Thanks for your comment. Well, I would like to be better each time. This improvement has to be done in all senses. As we have already mentioned, the characteristics given are the support, but I think those characteristics should be reinforced everyday. Everyday is an opportunity to build and improve our practices to achieve the best results

  3. Hi, Hans. What an interesting insights you have mentioned in the metaphor. Teachers play an important role inside and outside the classroom and our actions and words show others what we really are. Definitely, our profession implies a huge responsibility. Hans, what do you expect your students do or know after taking a course with you?

    1. Dear Sandrita,

When I start a new course with a new group I try to ask myself the same question you asked. And what I always answer is: I would like my students to remember that English is a beautiful subject, that is really important in our life and brings lots of opportunities to improve professionally and personally speaking.

      Thanks for your comment!
